Ban Ki-moon visits Energy Academy Europe
21 November 2018
8th secretary-general of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon visited the Energy Academy Europe last month. During his visit he opened the Global Center on Adaptation. This new center will give advice globally regarding climate adaptation and brings together a large network of partners from very different disciplines. The choice for the Energy Academy is therefore not a coincidence: not only is the EAE the most sustainable education building in The Netherlands, but bringing together knowledge was also an essential aspect of its design. The EAE allows for laboratories, offices and education spaces of the Hanzehogeschool, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Energy Valley, Energy Delta Institute, Groningen Energy and Sustainability Programme and the Energy Delta Gas Research to connect around a central atrium within the building. By using natural elements optimally the Energy Academy was able to attain a BREEAM Outstanding score and win the International BREEAM Awards 2017 in the category ‘Mixed Use & Other’ – all while being earthquake-proof.
