PODCAST: The Netherlands’ First Paris Proof national monument

10 October 2024

In the heart of Maastricht, the former 1911 Craft School has undergone an impressive transformation into the new headquarters of dsm-firmenich. This special project is a first: the first Paris Proof national monument in the Netherlands. A building where historical legacy meets modern sustainability standards.

The story behind the transformation of dsm-firmenich

On Sustainability Day, we launch a podcast in which client Kees van Helden (dsm-firmenich) and our architect-director Erik van Eck discuss the sustainable choices and collaborations within this project. They share their views on the transformation of the building and how they uniquely combined heritage and innovation.

Historic architecture meets sustainability

The renovated building in the Wyck district of the city combines carefully restored historical heritage with modern, sustainable new construction. With BREEAM Outstanding and Well Platinum certifications, the office meets the highest standards for sustainability and health. For example, the building is completely climate neutral and contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

We listed some of the sustainable measures:

  • Historic value is safeguarded: the old building structure with high classrooms, corridors and main staircases has been preserved and made visible again wherever possible.
  • By insulation with a cover wall and glazing on the inside of the existing facade, we make sure the facade is thermally up to date without compromising the historic character.
  • The existing parking garage has been retained. The new building was placed on top of it, so no new foundations were needed.
  • Basement basins store rainwater for greenery around the building.
  • The roof and facades are equipped with solar panels, allowing the building to generate energy
  • Ecological features such as nesting boxes and shelters for local wildlife (bats, bees, hedgehogs) are integrated into the design.

A sustainable clubhouse for dsm-firmenich

The headquarters is more than a workplace. With green patios, a clubhouse feel and extensive use of natural materials, the building offers a healthy, inspiring (work) environment for both employees and visitors.
