In this seven-part summer series, we explore unique residential houses that bring to life the modernist style of our predecessors, such as Jaap Bakema and Jo van den Broek. From Van Buchem residence to the iconic Sonneveld residence, each home tells a story.

1/7 Woonhuis Van Buchem (1961)

This unique residence in Hillegersberg was commissioned by director of department store Ter Meulen Post. A characteristic feature of this villa is that it was inspired by the department store itself, with its horizontal structure and the open character of the interior. An inspiring example of modernist architecture and a tribute to the innovative spirit of Jaap Bakema.

2/7 Woonhuis Ypenhof (1948)

Located near the Kralingse Plas in Rotterdam, this national monument was designed by J.H. van den Broek. Rated (by CONTREI) as a rare and uniquely preserved post-war residence, with high cultural-historical and architectural-historical value. The house is known for its large sliding glass doors and unique connection with nature. The garden, designed by Mien Ruys, and the geodesic greenhouse by R. Buckminster Fuller make this residence an architectural masterpiece.

3/7 Woonhuis van der Leeuw (1927)

In historic Kralingen, discover this architectural gem designed by van der Vlugt. This national monument reflects the vision of van der Leeuw, who helped shape the reconstruction of Rotterdam after the war. 5/7 Huis Zeckendorf (1960)
